WormeryMy neighbours also have a wormery which they use the fluid from for feeding their plants and I must admit it seems to work plus the worms seem to get through a fair bit of waste, has anyone else got a wormery? What do you think of them?

We've got one, but all the worms have died
It was quite good while it lasted though...

Libby

oh dear, was that from the cold or lack of scraps
|
Lizzie

It was from the cold and wet - they *should* have been put into the shed or greenhouse when it got really cold and *someone* forgot (the garden isn't really my department....)
However, I see that replacement worms can be bought from Wiggly Wigglers which is where I got the original wormery from (even though my parents thought it was hysterical that I was giving my OH worms for Christmas )
ETA we got them 4 or 5 years ago and it's only in the last 3 months or so that all activity has stopped, so they were a success for a good while.

so does the waste the worms make go on the compost or the garden?
They can't take alot of onions can they, what sort of scraps did you put on? Would you consider it an asset to the garden?

There's a wormery at the school and all the cooked food goes on it. No onions are used in cooking (children voted against it) so that makes it easier. Chaski (teacher who's in charge of wormery) uses some of the worms for the garden but keeps some back. I don't know much about it apart from getting told off for putting garlic in the worms bin!

I didn't know you could put cooked food in them.

I didn't know you could put cooked food in either...
Ours got most of the vegetable peelings (as mentioned, not too much onion or citrus as it's too acid) along with egg shells, the odd brown paper bag and sometimes, the hair from the dogs brush (as per the instructions that came with it). You can also get bags of 'worm treat' which OH insisted on - I think it counteracts any acidity in the scraps.
I'm not paid by them or anything, but Wiggly Wigglers instructions etc. are brilliant

you like Wiggly Wigglers don't you Lizzie

After looking at this thread last Friday night I went charging around the WWW (gosh its a big world out there )
I spent 3 hours finding out all I could about wormeries...
After looking to see how much they were to buy I decided to build one myself...
By this weekend I will have made one for less than £10
(as long as I can convince my brother he doesn't need quite as much gravel on his driveway as he's got )...
It should supply me with the plant food I need for this year plus some to swap & the potting compost for next year...
Well as Baldrick would say thats the cunning plan anyway...

Well I certainly like the sound of this. Any pics and even step by step instructions?

Err, umm not quite sure how to do the photo bit yet & will of course have to wait to see whether it does work...
But a quick update, I've proved to my brother that he really didn't need quite as much gravel on his drive
So, make the "bedding" tomorrow (weather forecast says rain...)
Sunday hunt through compost to find new residents...

The photos bit is easy just shout when you need to do it.
In the meantime, keep us updated as I am really interested in this, as I am quite keen to get one

Well they're in, Master Sparhawk & I spent 1/2 hour this afternoon scrabbling through a load of home made compost a found a load of worms who didn't realise that they were about to be moved to a select worm des - res instead of staying with the rest of the riff raff in the heap
Also found an old fleace jacket that I had which when zipped up & coller tied up fits just like a tea cosy over the bin...
So the proof of the pudding as they say is only a few weeks away I suppose, I'll pass on the design then incase it needs some modification...

Good oh!

We have worm wee
Not much but its there, just got to make sure I can sustain it & whether it will come on stream in useable quantities the I'll go public...

I was thinking about this the other day and wondered how it was going.
Look forward to hearing more soon.

Only on forums like this could make that kind of statement in that kind of way, with enthusiasm and excitement! Well done!!

now they would produce lots of worm wee, although keeping them in a wormery could be a bit of a problem

Hows this going?

Had a look this afternoon & the worms seem quite happy, there are baby worms too, but no more wee yet, still working on it though...
I'm thinking of adding a few dandelions to the mix

Excuse my ignorance but why?

Drink dandelion tea Libby, you'll soon find out, it's a diruetic (sp) as I found out to my cost on a long car journey many years ago!

Oh no what a time to find out
