Worsted Weight Wool

When a pattern requires Worsted Weight Wool,what does it mean? Is it an American term?
Its probably so obvious, I feel daft asking! Embarassed

UK v US
4-ply = Sportweight
Doubleknitting = Worsted
Aran = Fisherman or Medium weight
Chunky = Bulky

I must admoit I have done lots of knitting in my time but I've never heard of that!!!
