As far as I know there isn't a right way up. Some of mine don't produce slips, at the moment I have 9 in water and 5 are producing slips. Last year I did 3 spuds and only 2 of them produced, the 3rd one never produced anything.
dont be afraid. just snap them off and put them in water. they are eager to grow roots, trust me! i took cuttings in september to test that - they all had roots within 5 days or so!
Glad I read this. I received 3 rooted slips today from a chum so they are potted up and waiting to go to the plot. Mine will have to be upwardly mobile as I don't have the room to let them roam. Very exciting.
I have managed to get several shoots from sweet pots I bought in the shop. I cut mine into pieces first before planting into sand. Each piece has only one shoot each, therefore do I need to pull the shoot off? The actual piece of sweet pot has roots already. I am going to plant into a large tractor tyre and grow up canes - would this be OK?
sorry i am not sure. just came on here to say that i ended up giving about 11 slips away as there is no way i could have grown 15 plants! esp. considering i got almost a stone from 2 plants last summer - i couldn't possibly eat that much before it goes off.
