Carrots and parsnip will twist once the root hits something solid. My parsnips grow to a good foot of useable root so I'd always go for a garen sow. Carrots you can get away with a rose pot or deeper.

Earlier in this thread there is a mention of using loo roll tubes for starting off certain plants, does anyone have any particular suggestions for what seeds in particular they should be saved for?

... when using loo rolls ... think about long root systems such as peas and sweet peas ... and all the things that hate root disturbance ... such as sweetcorn etc Wink

1)
Recently i pressed into service the see-through plastic meat dishes you can get from supermarkets ... these were approx 10" x 5" and 1/2" deep ... they make excellent covers for loo rolls that I sat in a deeper container ... thus creating a mini propagater.

This prevented soil drying out and stopped me overwatering and rotting the seeds!!

2)
To germinate chillis and aubs I used those plastic dip tubs with lids ... again a mini-proopagater same priciple ... stopped me spilling soil in the airing cupboard too and geting into trouble at home Razz Laughing

Carrotts and Parsnips want loose finely tilled soilthough, downat least 12inches......With leeks, put the bog rol over the grens above ground level and gain an extra 6 inches of white.
