just found this in the garden. it was floating in a bucket of water, but moved away after I left it, so i hope it's ok.

i think it must be a female as it didn't have huge horns.

the peg is there for scale.

You are quite right Aqui, 'tis a Stag Beetle...

Infact it is a "Dorcus parallelopipedus" - Lesser Stag Beetle

I used to be phobic of beetles, but this on didn't worry me at all, strangely. I was just honoured to have such a creature in my garden. but then i am a strange grl!

I have done everything I can to encourage 'stag beetles' into my garden, but I just don't think we have any round here at all Sad
