what you could consider is sachets of poison that go down the rat runs, they take it to the nest and share it out and then the whole nest dies off....it's what we have done in our chicken run and it seems to work

also we tried putting dry sugar beet pulp in various locations round and about...it's the type of stuff that swells to 3 or 4 times the size when wet....the theory is that the rats eat it and then blow up....have to say, we haven't seen so many rats lately so who knows, maybe it worked...
