I googled a gekko picture but I don't think that is it.

It's a Common Lizard. We used to have them in my garden when I was growing up in So'ton. We had quite sandy banks around one bit of the garden and kids would come from miles around to try and catch the lizards and slow worms! I was quite used to handling them. First they pee on you to try and get you (the predator) to drop them, and if that doesn't work they will drop their tails - but I only had that happen once and never stressed any like that again. Not so "Common" these days perhaps.

I love lizards but thought that they loved hot weather - when we were in Greece I could watch them for hours Very Happy

There are several lizards which live in Britain - Common, Sand and the Slow-worm (which is really a legless lizard). They like dryish soils but don't need that much hot weather. You often see them "sun-bathing" though, especially early in the day when they need to warm up and get going. Here's a link to a site which will help with identification:
