Materials for this project are:
Cutting mat (Optional)
Suede thong 45cm long
Wire - 12cm long x 2 (this allows some extra for mistakes)
Pliers
Wire cutters
Large needle to pierce thong
Various beads, caps, spacer beads and cage
The finished bookmark

Materials I used.

Step 1 .I found it easier to divide the materials into the pots for each side of the bookmark.

Step 2 Pierce a hole near the end of the thong and pull the needle right through.

Step 3 Push the wire into the hole and bend the end over so it is nice and thin.

Step 4 Pull on a bead cap with a tiny bit of the thong through the cap, so you can't see the join.

Step 5 Make sure the first bead is sitting next to the cap so you can't see any join and then continue threading beads as you wish.

Step 6 Take a bead cage and gently prize the sides apart so you can fit a bead in.

Step 7 Push the bead into the cage.

Step 8 Give it a little squeeze, so it is safely inside and secure.

Step 9 Thread the cage onto the wire.

Step 10 Twist the end of the wire round itself so you have a nice clean finish.

Step 11 Repeat steps 1 - 5 for the other end of the bookmark, finishing with a large bead and a twisted end to keep it all secure.

Step 12 It should look something like this.

Finished Ta Da!!!!!!

hmm - can I use wool instead of thong? I've spent my budget for the month already on fun non-essentials. Also don't have any wire (apart from climber wires!) and cages (apart from the one with my tiger's eye crystal in, but I need that!) I shall just have to see what I can make!

I'd use a boot loace or similar rather than wool. Climbing wires would work fine and you can scratch off the green coating for the ends.

I'm looking at cutting the cost of the bookmarks as current if Becki tries to sell them via her site they will go at £5+ and no profit

What about making something similar to how Plocket made hers, they look very pretty and use less beads. I can't find the photo of them now, can't remember if she used wire. For a start using fewer beads would bring your costs down. And then there's mobile phone charms, keyring holders etc that you could do with beads, and I saw a zip charm on one of the childrens rucksacks at school, it was very pretty.

That's very pretty Aqui, what did you use at the ends, is it wire that you've twisted into shape yourself, it looks very effective.

yep - I just twisted the ends as I couldn't work out what to do because I hadn't bought all the right stuff! Still - I think it looks alright. Although it needs a bit more filing as it's sharp.

I have seen lots of Jeans at work with beaded bits hanging down from a belt loop, I am going to make some of those too. These would double up as rucksack charms I guess.
