Hmm, many years ago my grandmother taught me the very first basics of crochet.

Since then I have done an "aqui", bought the hook and then looked at in puzzlement...... Confused

Just found a great site, I was looking for crochet for beginners as I wanted some good pictures. It's arranged in 11 lessons so all I need to do now is decide which square we're doing! Laughing

Hi all,

if you want to jazz up the old granny squares, there is a nice pattern for a cardi/shrug in the Rowan "AM to PM" book. The design is called Meg and I am making it at the moment. I prefer knitting to crochet so I have never really made a lot of things with crochet, just blankets and small stuff.

Anyway, you use about 5 colours of DK wool, make squares by doing 4 rounds in 4 different colours, mixing the order up a bit, then the 5th round is done in your main colour.

You make 60 squares and then sew them up to make 12 rows of 5. This will give you your main rectangle, then you pick up stitches at either end and knit ribbed cuffs and then pretty up the long sides with a row of crochet.

It looks very pretty if you use the right colours. The pattern suggests you use rowan alpaca that costs about £6 or £7 per ball! It also says you need £13 x 50g balls! Its nice but not that nice. I got a bargain in my local Army & Navy store and bought a load of Jaeger Matchmaker Merino DK for £1.50 a ball. I don't think that it will take 13 balls, probably about 11, I bought 21 because I know I will use the rest and it was a terrific bargain, gorgeous to knit/crochet with.

I managed to find a picture of it, it does look nice. I've never done anything like this but it shouldn't be hard to make a rectangle, thanks for the tips. Very Happy
