Now Sarah is the expert in this, leaves books next to cash machines, in museums, cafes, park benches and hairdressers, she does.
I have done it a bit, but should do more.
See www.bookcrossing.com for details of how to do it.
They don't seem to. You stick a post it note on the front saying "free book!" and they do get passed on. I think they key is to find a good spot, Edinburgh has a number of cafes and bars where books are often left. Plus you can post on the website when you leave the book, and people go looking. Other good places are McDonald's, buses, trains etc.
You can print off the labels for the inside of the book from the bookcrossing website, it's a worldwide phenomenon.

i suppose i must answer yes to this as every once in a while i take a box of books to work and leave them in the rest room with "Free Books, help yourself" written on a piece of paper stuck to the box.
gradually they disappear and i often come home with something new to read in the same way
i always have 2 books on the go, one in the kitchen to read with my hurried breakfast and one by the bed for when i go night-nights
can't go to sleep without reading something................

i do occassionally thin out my books but to be honest, theres not any to thin out anymore. all the ones left are books i wont let go, and there are many many hundreds of them, and all the books i still buy are ones to keep and treasure. i dont go into quick read holiday fiction type books etc.

I have done that with a lot of childrens books that I loved, sold at the carboot years ago, ehn I was a grown up 14 year old, then have been buying them back off ebay for my children.
I have just come up on this thread. Has anyone heard of 'freecycle' Its a great idea. You join your local freecycle on line and if you have stuff thats not good enough to sell or you cant sell but want rid of. Rather than take it to a tip, skip or dump you give it away ...free, gratis, for nothing. Its a great idea. I have given so much stuff away and also recieved a lot of stuff too. You can give anything away from an old tyre to plants no longer needed , bikes, half used tins of paint .............anything one mans rubbish is another mans treasure.... do a search for freecycle and join your local one.
I have just registered with Bookcrossing as my house is full of books. I really need to Free some. Do you thing I definately need to send for the sticky labels and things or could I make my own? _________________ "If we reduce the amount of stuff we allow to accumulate in our lives, we won't have to organise it"
