Don't despair, I had major probs with an older machine and found this guide. Everything you need, follow it to the letter and your machine will work!

There's lots of other articles on the site too, relating to all things sewing machine.
that looks a really good article, I will print it out for mum as she has been having 'tnsion' problems with her machine! Thanks _________________ "If we reduce the amount of stuff we allow to accumulate in our lives, we won't have to organise it"

Oops I don't think I updated this. The weekend I went to look after Uncle, I took said sewing machine and Kathy's instructions with me.
After setting it all up and switching on, it wouldn't work at all. After much fiddling and muttering I gave up on it and stopped to make Uncle a cup of tea.
Just as we both sat down the sewing machine started working all on its own, only at supersonic speed and...
.....smoke started pouring out of the foot peddle
I pulled the plug out pdq and dread to think what would have happened if we hadn't been in the same room for a while. Aforementioned sewing machine is now officially retired!
I think it might be the capacitor, my sewing machine man showed us how he repaired a similar problem on my old machine. It should be repairable and foot pedals can still be bought, might be worth finding a repair man?
