The Potting Shed

I've got this plan to knit a patchwork blanket for our bed. Really I'd like to sew a patchwork quilt, but that's going to take a lot of learning. And I'm not that good at crocheting either!

I've decided to knit 4-in squares and sew them together (I'd like to avoid the sewing part, but I don't have needles long enough to knit it all in one!) How can I ensure they are all the same size? Especially as I'll be using wool from my stash which is all different types.

I've started knitting squares that are 15 stitches per row on 8mm needles. If I do this with them all (as long as I keep the tension the same) will they all be close enough to the same size to use?

If it was me, I'd knit them diagonally, then it's easy to make sure they're all got the same size even with different weights of wool.

Cast on one stitch, knit and increase by one stitch at each end of each row until you have 4 inches measured from the first stitch to your needle, then carry on knitting but decrease one stitch at each end of each row - effectively, you're knitting a diamond (there are some squares knitted this way in the Great Potting Shed Baby Blanket that you can look at for reference, if you've still got it!).

I did try that but they seemed to come out more like elongated squares. can this be corrected when sewing up?

I have still got the potty blanket. It's still looking great! I was actually using it as a visual demonstration to T of what I wanted to do (by lying it on our bed basically!)

I would, but I can't find the rest of my needles! I bought these last week from a charity shop. They are wood as well and lovely to hold.
